I reported aboard USS Mahan DDG 42 in March 1985.By April,I'd started going to Patriot's Point & spending numerous dollars wandering through naval history.Would like to do it again.
Geez, my wife and I were down in Savannah last October. Had I known that Yorktown was just north in Charleston I would have gone up there and taken a tour. It seems that they have a pretty good collection of aircraft. My father was a career naval aviator who began flying back in '42. Several of the A/C in the collection were of types he flew, including the F4F, F6F, F4U, SBD and AD1. Beautiful birds!
i was on board the yorktown from december 1965 till i was discharged in august 1967.i was attached to the opperations division and i was a photomate and my job was working in the ships photolab.i am phil elsner photomate third class ,ret.i loved being aboard the yorktown and she deserves being a monument to all the brave sailors that served aboard her.
