The demolition of the southern mile of the Alaskan Way Viaduct on the Seattle waterfront began around 8:40 pm on Oct. 21, 2011 with the application of an articulated jack hammer which began demolishing the one time Connecticut Street off ramp. The viaduct, built in the 1950s is being torn down to be replaced by a deep bore tunnel.
