MaximsNewsNetwork: 16 July 2009 - UNTV: A Security Council committee today (16 July) added ten North Korean government officials and scientists to a sanctions blacklist following the DPRKs underground nuclear test in May.

The new sanctions include a travel ban on five North Korean government officials and scientists involved in the country's nuclear and missile development and asset freezes on five North Korean entities.

The Chairman of the Committee, Ambassador Fazli Corman of Turkey, told reporters that following the adoption of resolution 1874 last month, the committee was directed to make designations of individuals and entities and goods. He added that he was pleased to report that today the committee has taken action.

The Security Council had previously banned all weapons shipments except small arms to North Korea and authorized cargo inspections.

Fazli emphasized that these sanctions are carefully targeted at only those individuals responsible for the DPRKs ballistic missile, nuclear and other WMD related programs and are designed to minimize any unintended humanitarian consequences on the people of the DPRK.

Japanese Ambassador Yukio Takasu called the sanctions a major achievement, pointing out that todays decision is final and formal and doesnt require further approval by the Security Council.

Responding to a reporters question, Takasu said that It is very clear that some of the entities have different names, aliases and other things which will be made public in a relevant Security Council document. He added that if these entities just dissolve the corporation name and create a new one, obviously the 1718 committee will act, I think accordingly.

The individuals named on the sanctions list are Yun Ho-Jin, Director of Namchongang Trading Corporation; Ri Je-Son, Director of the General Bureau of Atomic Energy (GBAE); Hwang Sok-Hwa, Director in the General Bureau of Atomic Energy (GBAE); Ri Hong-Sop; former director of the Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center; and Han Yu-Ro, director of Korea Ryongaksan General Trading Corporation.

The named North Korean entities are Namchongang Trading Corporation, Hong Kong Electronics, Korea Hyoksin Trading Corporation, General Bureau of Atomic Energy (GBAE) and Korean Tangun Trading Corporation.

Two items, graphite designed or specified for use in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machines and Para-aramid fiber filament and tape, were also added to the sanctions list.
