@TheOfficialVespar XM is a file format that stands for "extended module". Basically it's a file that can be read by Fasttracker. (Very simply put a tracker is used to make this kind of music) You could say that what MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG is for "normal" music XM (but also MOD, IT and a bunch of others) is for chiptune music. To play them I recommend XMPlay. As you can see these tracker files are a lot smaller than MP3, WAV or similar file types.
