Cost of living is always important when choosing a place to live. And, given the current state of the economy, it is becoming even more important.

Along with all the other great things the Roanoke Region has to offer, an affordable cost of living allows you to be more flexible with your money compared to most other places.

According to the Council for Community and Economic Research (the organization that conducts the ACCRA Cost of Living Survey), the Roanoke Region boasts a Cost of Living Index of 91.5. Compared to Charleston, SC (96.1), the U.S. (100), Richmond, VA (101.2), and Raleigh, NC (104.8), your money really does go farther in the Roanoke Region.

That's not all. Compared to Washington, D.C., Richmond, VA, Raleigh, NC, and the national average, housing is significantly more affordable in the Roanoke Region. Moreover, Roanoke is the only metropolitan area out of those cities where housing costs are LESS than the national average (Roanoke MSA: 93.6, U.S.: 100---as of November 2008)! Combine an affordable cost of living and competitive housing prices, you can live where you want AND how you want. Think about it: you can actually take advantage of all the opportunities available in the place you live!

Cost of living and affordable housing is also good for business. Less of your money is spent on utilities, it is less expensive to move your business or expand, and relocating labor is easier because everyone enjoys saving money.

The Roanoke Region provides the same opportunities available in other metros: art galleries, museums, shopping, upscale dining, music, and more. Plus, the region offers an array of unique living options ranging from downtown metropolitan apartments and historic neighborhoods to suburban and waterfront communities. Add unrivaled outdoor recreation opportunities into the mix and an affordable cost of living, and well, it just doesn't get much better than the Roanoke Region.

But, shhh, don't tell anyone.
