John Prescott, the shopworkers union USDAW and UNISON today called on David Cameron to publicly denounce a Tory Private Members Bill to abolish the National Minimum Wage.
The call comes on the day that the National Minimum Wage has been uprated by 7p to £5.80 an hour for workers aged 22 and over.
102 Labour MPs signed an Early Day Motion within four hours of being launched last night calling on the Tory leader to distance his party from the Employment Opportunities Bill, which has its second reading on Friday May 15th.
The bill, which has been proposed by 11 senior Tory MPs, aims to:
- allow employees to opt-out of the minimum wage
- ensure all public sector jobs are advertised openly
- grant the right to work under the Declaration of Human Rights by allowing workers to be paid less than the minimum wage
Usdaw launched the Wage Concern campaign to stop a Bill that will totally undermine the minimum wage and drive millions of workers back to poverty pay. It has been supported by John Prescotts Go Fourth and
UNISON.
