Richard and Kahlan give into their desires and Richard becomes confessed. Kahlan decides to leave, believing that will keep Richard safe, but when Richard is captured in her absence, Kahlan is forced to go back and safe him.
Fate would have it that just when Kahlan gets back to Richard, Cara and Zedd, she gets bitten by a poisonous spider. Her heart stops beating just long enough for Richard to be released from confession.
Then, during their quest, Kahlan herself becomes confessed and she is forced to try and confess Richard again. But this time it doesn't work and she is forced to kill Richard.
Seeing Richard dying in front of her eyes, Kahlan is released from confession and her grief for Richard brings him back to life.
Then they realise Kahlan can't confess Richard anymore and that they can be together...
