Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. In North America, most converts to Islam are women, many of whom are drawn to the religion through their experiences of social injustice and political involvement.

Ironically many mosques force women to pray behind barriers away from the men, and some mosques do not even permit women to enter the building. When it comes to user-friendliness for women, Canadian mosques run the entire gamut.

In Me and the Mosque, journalist and filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz visits mosques throughout Canada and talks to scholars, colleagues, friends and neighbours about equal access for women. Discussions about the historical role of women in the Islamic faith, the current state of mosques in Canada and personal stories of anger, fear, acceptance and defiance punctuate the film. And Nawaz herself speaks of the spiritual longing that comes from belonging to an institution that doesn't want you.

With original animation, archival footage and deeply personal interviews, Me and the Mosque is a smart, self-aware and whimsical story that documents the debates and presents the personalities on all sides of the issue.

  • thanks for posting this. I really enjoy watching Zarqa's work

  • I don't understand why she's making such a huge deal about the curtain. Men don't need to see us while we pray. They simply don't. If you want them to see you then you may need to rethink your intentions... I have no problems with the curtain.

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the song at 1:45 ...IT would go good with my FIFA 12 Road to Division 1 with Turkey National Team

  • I mean no disrespect to any Musliminas but I have a question. I come from a Christian background and husbands and wives sit together and worship together. This is an important aspect and in my experience, there is no major problem of women or men getting distracted by the other because we are all there for God. Isn't it hard to worship this way? Does it make you feel isolated? My husband is Muslim and I asked him if I could go see the Mosque but he said I am woman so my place is at home.

  • @movingdragons I posted a similar comment on another's video, but had this thought of having a take-off of this brought here to America retitled as "Little House In The Heart Of Dixie" or "Little Mosque In The Bible Belt". Have it situated in Alabama and centered around an immigrant family who own an auto shop, are fond of race cars and/or motorcycles, hunting, shooting and country music; own at least one full-size 4WD pickup; and all in all do their best balancing faith and culture.

  • This is a wonderful film. I want to see more Muslims standing up for human rights and gender equality. This will make people see this religion in a positive way. I was so happy to see many strong women.

  • Where are the other parts?

  • PLZ NOT "MOSQUE" IT IS " MASJID". LOOK AT THE OXFORD DICTIONARY. MOSQUE IS THE SHORT FORM OF MOSQUITO.
