This was shot by my father Ronald Redburn in 1938. His local cine club visited Croydon Airfield. It was that year that the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had flown back to there after his meeting with Hitler at Munich. The camera was a Keystone and the film was Kodak 8mm. My father was one of the first 8mm users in the UK. He could get color film at trade price from someone he knew who owned a local shop for the same cost as the same number of minutes of 9.5mm which was the usual armature film stock of the period.

  • It's funny that people of any era always think "We live in the modern age! Look at our technical marvels!" and then they become blurry figures on someone's historical film...

Oh I long for a time machine :-D

  • Absolutely superb video. Many thanks to your father !!

  • Yes you are right. I think said it was the same year, but it was Heston Aerodrome he flew to.

  • When Chamberlain returned from Munich he did so to Heston Aerodrome, not Croydon Airport as stated in the video caption.

  • This is fascinating

  • Amazing video!

  • 0:24 Trying to get in on the act! Cool video. Did they go to the water palace, after the trip to the Airpot?

  • This is very interesting, as the boundary fence of the old aerodrome used to be across the road from where i live. My next door neighbor who is 93, can remember the aircraft coming right up to the fence. Absolutely amazing to see this footage, and of waddon station too. Thank you for posting this.

  • @vorlander69 There was a big war shortly after this video. A guy who shared your opinions. What was his name?

  • Absolutely fascinating piece of history. Lovely to see the Handley Page HP42 and astonishing nowadays to see the Junkers 52 complete with swastika at London Airport! Thank you so much for sharing.
