Please read this: This is not a speedrun, but rather a playthrough, where I only play the level through.

I don't think this game is all too well known due to the fact that it was only released on the Famicom Disk System. This is a great game, though there are obviously some flaws in it, mainly the moving platforms. The moving platforms tend to sort of "lock" you the second you come close to them, sometimes making you miss the jump, fortunately, this doesn't come too fatal often in the game, but it can sure take your time.

I took the liberty of cutting the loading screens and disk switch screens due to the loading times being sometimes absurdly long.

Anyway, in the beginning of the stage, I show you a neat trick which can get you 50 throwing knives right at the beginning. The game is set that when you use the last weapon you have, it automatically gives you 50 throwing knives, this means that when you use the 30 knives you get at the beginning, you get back 50.

Oh, I also missed a secret in the stage, you have to break the wall using the "mace".

About the boss:

Health: 16
Hits Needed:
Dagger: 16
Bomb: 4 (3,2)
Pistol: 8
Bolas: 6 (5,33333333...)
Orb: 16
Mace: 8
Score: 5,000
Difficulty: Easy
Suggested Weapon: Pistol

  • Man, i LOVE that "KACHINK" sound from Konami games.

  • Yeah, it's a classic, I think I first heard it in the first TMNT game... first.

  • lol why did you waste your ammunition on the knives in the beginning of the game?

I used to have this game 20 somethin' years ago...still remember the gameplay as if I played yesterday..Thanks for bringing back the precious memories

  • I wanted to show the trick on getting 50 throwing knives right at the beginning, but I didn't need the 20 extra ones, so I wasted them.

  • It's a fairly decent game, so I wonder why Konami didn't release it in America? The music might have to be dumbed down a little, but the gameplay would stand.

  • I don't know, I would've loved this game if it was released back then.

  • I first heard of that classic sound from "Blades of Steel" BTW do you think that this games has some Indiana Jones references to it? I think Konami would have did a hellava lot better making the Indiana Jones game more entertaining than that damn "tengen" company.

  • love the music

  • Thank you, with utmost sincerity, for posting this run.

Seriously, seeing artifacts from my past that I barely remember expounded upon in detail...with full video, no less...is one of my greatest pleasures of the Internet age.

That plus I finally know what the *name* of this game is, thank heavens. Konami of America was useless, I tell you!

  • @80s90sRealBasketball This is loosely based on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (minus the constantly whining harpy and the cocky kid). The big jewel the hero is tasked with recovering, "Arumana", is a pretty clear expy of the Sankara Stones.

The big difference, of course, is that Indy is great at close combat, whereas this hero is helpless if he ever runs out of ranged weapons.

  • @skyrunner14 Most likely fear of reprisals from Paramount. Konami was *very* careful about possible copyright infringements at the time (e.g. Dracula being changed to "The Count" in the first Castlevania).

Probably would've been pretty forgettable, especially stacked against Castlevania, Contra, Metal Gear, Gradius, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, et al.

  • You have done a great service to the gaming community with this detailed play through. I like the graphical depiction of the movement of water in the first stage.

  • the first level music is epic

  • I remember playing this game on NES, and it was titled Indiana Jones LOL, I got punk'd back then.

  • nice use of the extra sound channel of the fds. :)

  • also, the character of this game looks like a dumbed down version of "Bayu Billy" with the hat and his attire (clothing)

  • yeah it is safe to say that this game has more references to those two games you've mentioned.
