  • The lift shown here (from 3/13/71) is certainly NOT a 203 kg press. Rigert set 64 world records, but only one in the press: 198 kg in July of 1972. That was his best press -- a year and a half after this meet. However in the meet above, Rigert DID clean and jerk a world record 203, which is what the announcer is referring to, and that is where the confusion comes from.

  • I can see why the Press was discarded. This lift should have been failed. He dipped almost as much as if he was jerking.

  • Rigert looks like Tony Montana

  • The narration DOES say he's pressing 203 kg, but it's a mistake. Rigert's all-time best press was a world record 198 kg done in 1972, a year AFTER this video. The 203 kg he made in the 1971 Friendship Cup was actually in the Clean and Jerk. You can look it up by googling Rigert's list of records. He set a ton of records in the snatch and jerk, but only one in the press, the 198 kg.

  • @finrod55 Well, I know russian, in video they say there are 203kg, I don't know if it is true, but I guess if they say so it is.

  • @Apjooz Mladen Kuchev of Bulgaria was awarded a world record at 67.5 for "pressing" 157.5kg in a more exaggerated style than this---and Russ Knipp was turned down for a lift that was less distant from strict (because the judges were Communist!)

  • well, everyone is discussing the technique in this video......

yes, I would classify this as a bit of a 'push press' ; nevertheless the strength it took is amazing.....man, just to have the power to clean , bottom out and rise up standing with this weight in the front squat position is awesome.....

david rigert was an amazing technician.......

  • @leaba Fitting description. The goal became to "press" as much as possible, purity of movement was discarded. Marvin Eder did 315 x 3 in 1953 at 193 to 197 lbs, no drugs at all, strict, strict, strict. It could have been worth 340 x 1. Could Rigert have done a 340 strict? Maybe---after a lot of specific training. Remember, great press specialists can get by with less leg development, so, they can carry more muscle upstairs. C & J demands usually more leg development than press specialist.

  • @grambo22 russian weightlifting is big where are you from cuz the usa unless national meet its small

  • How could they pass that as a press is beyond me...
