In the post-post-Cold War world, the United States considered itself the world's default diplomatic leader - but it is no longer the only nor undisputed one. A far more diffuse global governance is emerging among rising powers, multilateral organizations, regional institutions, private companies, and transnational NGOs. The open, dynamic and globally engaged American society - but not yet the American state - is well - placed to capitalize on this transformation. The US government now needs to catch up and globalize itself to maintain America's position in the world.
