Richard Okoth Oduor is a Kenyan researcher in the Plant Stress Lab at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He comes from the same village as Barack Obama's father. His work involves studying extreme survivor plants, that can survive months of drought or high salt or other conditions that would normally kill off plants. Once he knows these survivor-style plants' secrets, he can use the new techniques of genetic modification to offer African farmers crops tailor-made for the weather and soil.
