The Germans are desperate to break Engalnd and launchs unrestricted submarine warfare again and American sips are sunk. The tide of opinion in America turns against Germany and a once reluctant America enters the war
@yadidimeanmaine I would imagine that the strategy of arming merchant ships was similar to what America did early on in the war of 1812. Armed American merchant ships were so successful (in 1812), that not only did they defend themselves, but they often captured british war ships. I think Wilson was thinking that modern merchant ships would have the same capabilities.
WTF was Wilson thinking? An executive order to arm merchant ships?! What did he think was going to happen? His advisors must have been swayed by Brittish interests; that lost briefcase thing seems a lil' fishy to me.
America should've stayed out of WW1 and let the European Powers beat their brains out

Wilson knew these ships would stand no chance. He needed a counterweight to isolationists and pacifists and he got it this way.
