Sites & Sounds: Festival @ Epanochoriani, Amorgos

The "Procession of the Holy Icons" is a traditional religious event, taking place every year on the island of Amorgos on the first week after Easter. The Icons are carried on foot from the Chozoviotissa Monastery to the villages, the churches and the chapels in the country.

I followed along the pilgrimage way between the Panagia Epanochoriani church and the village of Langada. At the village, traditional "kserotigana" were offered and local dancers in traditional costumes danced to the tunes of the outi and the violin.

I filmed this event on Sunday April 30th 2006. I edited the 22 min footage down to a six minute video using Adobe Premiere Pro v1.0

A teenage girl about 17 had gone to visit some friends one evening and time passed quickly as each shared their various experiences of the past year. She ended up staying longer than planned, and had to walk home alone. She wasn't afraid because it was a small town and she lived only a few blocks away.
