As in other parts of the developing world, HIV presents a serious challenge to India. India's conservative culture has made it difficult to raise awareness about the disease and how to fight it, but caring, dedicated people like Dr. Sunita Solomon have lead the effort. While India's HIV rate is much lower than other developing nations, some 5.7 million people still carry the virus. The efforts of Dr. Solomon and her team at the Y.R.G. Centre for AIDS Research and Education are helping to stem the epidemic and make a positive impact in Indian society.
