Vintage gauging station used to measure depth and current changes just outside of Denali National Park. Lower Savage river at junction with Teklanika. Just off the Stamped trail at mile25. Teklanika river broke record highs that day. Famous Chris McCandless tried to cross the tek only a few steps from here.

  • This experience only heightened my desire to make it, and Both Vinny and myself made successful solo trips thereafter. Then they came to make the movie in Cantwell more than 50 miles south of the Stampede turnoff in Healy (GeorgeParks Highway) . . . I guess most of us living in Denali just lacked the confidence that they could do justice to the true heart of the story w/o exploiting it. I thought the book was better personally.

  • On that day the river broke a USFS record high (Daniel), and a 6 braided section of the Tek. (South of the canyon) almost claimed our lives. After making the best of our day/lives (Zip-lining the Savage) and hiking back out, we found out that the day we failed to cross and make it to the bus was the same day of the year that Chris failed to cross from the other side. The only difference is that he had a perfectly good gauging station at his side of the cable.

  • First of all . . . to set the record straight, this is the Savage river 70 yards east of where it meets the Teklanika. This is not the cable that could have saved Chris' life. To our dismay, the Teklanika cable had been cut by hunters trying to keep people just like us from completing our voyage. Maybe even in our best interest. I don't want to get shot . . . I saw that B movie surviving the game.

  • Youre free to have your naive and briefly thought out, or not thought out at all opinions. Your opinion seems based on his book though, so you should already know he climbed the Devils thumb in AK solo. Hes most known for Everest. Anyways, not so much a pansy. The author, as well as the subject his book is based on, are two people who should be last to be refered to as pansys. They both went for their dreams.

  • yeah i've heard it's actualy an un-predictable

    body of water

  • Plus, besides the river swelling up to 30ft, depending what time of yera, it was the Teklinika river they were talking about in the book

  • You dumb douche. The river's depth changes by almost 30 feet depending on the time of year and how much snow and rain has fallen.

  • In the book they said it was 20+ feet above the ground, what a pansy author.
