  • Le dernier mec à penser d'abord à son pays plutot qu'à sa carrière

  • Despite his anglophobia, I do have a sneaking admiration for Charles de Gaulle. I always have done, and I think UK Prime Ministers could learn a lot from him.

  • @emangi1 Didn't you read the last line of my message for christ's sake?

  • @dezboss that's a completely anecdotal and inconsequential argument when considering the greater scheme of things. Kind of proves my point.

  • @emangi1 Well, we it was due to his anglophobia that the UK took until 1973 to join the EEC. So whether you like it or not, it marks something for us.

But there is no questioning De Gaulle's greatness in French and world history.

  • @dezboss the rest of the world couldn't care less about his "anglophopia". Doing so is totally redundant and prevents mature appreciation for what he stood for not just for France, but all humanity. Few if any leaders come close these days.

  • @ZHFstudios He was really, he openly said that 'England, like Germany, is our hereditary enemy'.

  • @dezboss I think we got him wrong in UK we saw him as a sort of Colonel Blimp figure when in fact he was an extraordinarily intelligent man . He certainly didn't care for the Brits but his remarks showed that he understood the country .

  • @tincoffin I do agree to an extent. De Gaulle was an absolute pain who must have been a nightmare to work with, and I do believe the biggest reason he vetoed the UK's application to join the EEC was sheer anglophobia, but if you listen carefully to the political reasons he gave for refusing us to join, I think he had a point.

And this is coming from a patriotic Englishman, aswell as a commited Francophile and Europhile.

  • Oui! Le général De Gaulle fut l'homme le plus digne de sa fonction présidentielle! Mon Général la France ne vous oubliera pas,ni son peuple ni ses générations jusqu a la fin du monde! vive la république!vive de gaulle et vive la france!!!

  • @Ebla2000 He, and some other French leaders, like Giraud, also didn't appreciate how various allied leaders, in particular some American, weren't so fond the Free French leadership, and what they truly stood for (i.e. a renewed France not to be punished by the Allies as having been a Axis collaborator).

Numerous French, also, still felt bitter about the British-led efforts in the evacuation of Allied forces at Dunkirk, and the British disabling of the French fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
