Nike Hercules missiles were NUCLEAR devices with 2 kiloton, 20 kiloton and 40 kiloton yields. They started small and if needed jumped to higher yields to destroy incoming Russian Bombers. it would fly up about 25 to 30 miles high, then arch downward, detonating above the aircraft. The blast wave would then push downward on the aircrafts wings, shearing them off. As airframes are meant to take pressure from below(lift), they are fragile when forced down. Dead Bird Fall Fast!

US deployed these rockets and nuclear cannon to Greece and i had to rott my childhood over their because daddy provided comm links to both systems. The cannon was a joke. it was stored in a pit that filled with water. the troops maning it were as good as dead.

They had surface to surface capability also. They targeted Cuba during the Kennedy missile crisis.

yes its a surface to air missle...but they are fitted with a W31 nuke warhead...most were decom. by mid 70's, as the U.S. realized the real threat was from foreign ICBMs as opposed to bombers. The Atlas, Titan, and peacekeeper MX launch vehicles took over...but now, sub-launched BCM's are currently the ones in use. The only land ICBM still in use are the "minutemen" (from the 60's, and still goin strong)

Near Cheech Marin's house??
Nicely restored Nike Hercules and the base to go with it! Where is this launch battery? I'd love to see one in action! Do they have the control facility restored too?

I dont think these are classified because the technology on them is so outdated like the "computer" that used mechanical gears to do calculus that told the missile when to blow up. we did get an exclusive tour of the missile site becuse I am in boy scouts (star rank) the guy took us underground into the missile hangars and we got to see the missile come up from the hangar on an elevator. it was really cool. it was filmed with an HP photosmart R927 camera
