May 2, 1993 (Air show at MCAS El Toro) A vintage F-86 Sabre crashed and exploded in the middle of a runway at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro after the pilot, James A. Gregory, failed to come out of a vertical loop about a quarter-mile from spectators. The impact killed the pilot and sent flaming debris along the ground. No one on the ground was injured.

  • Seems as tho everyone and there mother was at this show.

  • I was there in the grandstands and was saying to my friend, "isn't he too low" when he slammed into the runway. We could feel the heat from the blast. It was aweful! I still have dreams of plane crashes to this day. RIP Mr Gregory. God bless his family.

  • I knew Jim when I was a kid. My father worked for him and was on his air show crew for a time. I spent a lot of time around that F-86 and flew with him in other planes. I found out about the crash on phone and never knew there was video until now. I still think of his wife and daughter sometimes. For those wondering why he didn't eject - he probably wasn't aware that he was coming in so low, and I remember him saying that the ejection seat in that thing would probably break your back anyway.

  • i was at that air show he was in a loop when it happened and the only planes to go back up were the blue angels and wasnt till 3 hours later

  • why he didn't eject why?may god bless his soul he burned 2 death in front of his family!

  • @solomonpilot767

It's awfully strange, isn't it? I guess they didn't want it to end on such a tragic note...
