I never thought about the safety aspect of it at all, but you are right, now that Im riding with different people, the skill/knowledge level is so different.

Exactly! Apologies if you are being ironic but... peletons are against the rules of Ironman racing in which there is a virtual draft zone that varies from race to race but is generally set at 5-10m behind the rider in front in which you are only allowed to enter for a short period of time to perform an overtaking manouever. This makes the race much more about individual performance and is also much safer as the level of bike handling skills in triathletes varies enourmously compared to bikies.
