Canada's universal health care system was the envy of the world. But today five million Canadians don't have a family doctor. As a result, when we get sick we either clog up hospital emergency rooms or go to walk-in clinics that don't know our medial histories and can offer little continuity of care. The situation is already critical, and is about to get much worse--with a huge bulge of baby boom doctors about to retire, and younger doctors not inclined to sacrifice personal lives for their careers.

How did we get here? And how do we get back to the level of primary health care that we believe is our right as Canadian citizens? Filmmakers Sharon Bartlett and Maria LeRose set out on a cross country journey, talking to ordinary Canadians, doctors, and health care experts to investigate the present crisis , its causes and possible solutions.

  • About a year old. The situation is still the same and in some communities has worsened.

  • @SparwoodApple Yeah I'm smelling plenty of BS from this video as well.

Seems like a typical PR piece by insurance industry to con people into spending more and getting less as is the case in the US.

Even if I believed the 5 million number (which I dont), try nearly 50 million in the US who not only dont have a family doctor but dont have healthcare period! Who if they get sick or injured can lose their savings, retirement, home and their life thanks to the private insurance industry.

  • The Canada Health Act Discriminates Against Injured

Workers By Excluding Them From "Access To Health Services Without Financial Or Other Barriers" By Excluding "Any Health Services That A Person Is Entitled To And Eligible For Under Any Act Of The legislature Of A Province That Relates To Workers' Or Workmen's Compensation" And That This Leaves Injured Workers Vulnerable To Wrongdoing By The Workers Compensation System

  • Hey Canadians... Please consider health tourism in eastern countries...

Only if a lot of people do this, then the Govt. will be forced to come to terms with the reality!!!

I am not trying to influence you! You do the research and you go where you want to go.

Only then you will know how good Canada is and also HOW dumb some important really are!!!

Mind that the Canadian DOLLAR is growing strong everyday!!!

  • I graduated from Canada (now in the USA) in the mid 80s and things were good. But it was apparent that forward planning after the baby boom retirement would be critical. That would have meant early investment (always cheaper) by increasing the size of medical schools thus graduating more qualified doctors. Now, in an economic downturn everything is more difficult and expensive including quick fixes like hiring from abroad, which never addresses the problem.

  • @Navywxman F.Y.I. maybe you should keep your comments to yourself if you can't get the facts straight...One of the ladies in this video is my aunt, it's real, not just a "PR" piece as you put it.

  • hahaha as normally i heard from everyone, canada is lacking of doctor, thats why i'm thinking of become one

  • I live in a small community in Alberta, Canada and when I moved here I found a doctor right away and when he moved away I found another right away. I am not doubting that it is hard to fins doctors in rural areas but I believe this to be the same in the States as well. Doctors would rather work in urban centers.

  • @juxtn lol, this video is pure bullshit finace by insurance compagny and pro-conservative...
