For this month's YouTube Commentary Project, Artist Steve Lambert selected a series of written comments to be read aloud. Thanks to Scott V from Oakland, Cynthia Yardley, and Christina Kral.
I laughed when she was all 'this was Shostakovich's big fuck you to Stalin' because the 5th was actually written to placate him after the highly dissonant works known as 'Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk' and the 4th Symphony.
Also, to the kid who was all 'dude, it's Lenny B., you don't argue with him'; it's music. There's no such thing as a 'right' way to do it.
Here's my comment Go to school and crack a book you snot nosed know it all smart aleck kids BEFORE you say anything about someone like Bernstein or all the musicians in this video whom you will never begin to approach in any realm. Why is that? Because they have WORKED HARD unlike your lazy slacker asses who were taught from day one that you were gifted and never had any demands placed on you. Well guess what? You will be in for a rude awakening, just like your patron saint Chairman ZerO Obama.
The faster tempo has always been controversial. But, when Bernstien conducted this in Moscow for Shostakovich himself, it's said the composer commented that, while not technically correct, Bernstien's interpretation was in the spirit of the piece. As scored, it is much slower, and possibly grander, although not as exciting. At 9:20 it's almost an orgasm! One of multiples!
I like how Bernie bows to his orchestra before he turns to face the audience. What class!
ah, youtube culture
This is great.
