Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Service - West Dunbartonshire Council
Partner organisations: Brain Injury Experiences Network (BIEN), West Dunbartonshire CHP and Momentum Skills

This service was set up to develop community based integrative assessment and rehabilitation for adults from the West Dunbartonshire area where acquired brain injuries are the primary issue affecting their quality of life. By applying a partnership approach; providing assessment, support, education and advice the service aims to facilitate individuals' transition from hospital back into community living and meaningful activity, by improving services and the knowledge and understanding of ABI among people who use services, carers and professionals.

The Oasis, Garelochhead - Argyll and Bute Council
Partner organisations: NHS Highland and CrossReach

The Oasis is a local day care/day hospital service commissioned by the partners involved to meet the needs of older people and dementia sufferers in the Garelochhead and Rosneath area as no service was available.

The service meets social and healthcare needs, using the facility as a base for the delivery of anticipatory, intermediate and long-term healthcare, preventing hospital admission and facilitating discharge.

Involving people who use the service and carers support are core components of service delivery. The next steps will move provision away from traditional 'office-hours', to provide evening and weekend services and to implement carer-led support networks.

  • While pehaps sounding a little selfish, It was heartening to see the mention of Carer's.

In Australia, the governement seems to just think a financial hand out is all thats needed.

After 4 years as a Carer of someone with an ABI, I am so jaded, both mentally and physically. I also run a ABI group but this agains focuses on the person with the ABI.

However Carers in Oz just seem to be an attachment and I do feel that there needs to be a focus on help for Carers as well!
