This occured couple months back all that it needed was a new VSS. The Vehicle Speed Sensor sends signals to the PCM in turn helps the electronic Transmission to switch gears. Also it helps control the speedometer. excuse the quality it was shot with a Blackberry Cell Phone.

my 98 does pretty much same shifts different times and overdrives by itself like at 40 - 50 mph when i let the gas go.. similar to a stick shift car like if you hit the clutch and just release it how it jerks and then rpms jump up and lower .. Im hoping its the VSS and not a tranny problem.. anyone kno where the vss is on this car?

where is it located for me to tight it up?
this started happening to me when i was driving on a really bad dirt road. I dont think the sensor is bad, think its just not placed really good.
I notice it doesn't work proper when the engine warms up, but sometimes if making a really fast curve, it goes back to normal.
Hope it's easy to fix.

@JN0892 Idk if u noticed, but i looked at it again and noticed it has Km/h. Might be a canadian car.

YOU MIGHT NOT NEED A NEW VSS, my 1998 taurus SE did the same thing and sometimes it would stay in first, but I just tightened the VSS down and everything returned to normal. Maybe you should check that out.
