Neville Marriner leads the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra in this performance (recorded in London in November 1977) of excerpts of Bach's Mass in B minor, BWV 232. Laszlo Heltay is choral director. From the cassette which you see above (at 2:39; the full cassette covering can be seen at 48:02), which I purchased in the late 1970s shortly after this recording was issued by Philips. Margaret Marshall, soprano; Janet Baker, contralto; Robert Tear, tenor; Samuel Ramey, bass.

Note: Track 1 (Gloria) ends somewhat abruptly as a result of a problem with the tape.

1. Gloria In Excelsis Deo
2. Et In Terra Pax (1:55)
3. Domine Deus (6:33) (Margaret Marshall)
4. Qui Tollis Peccata Mundi (12:23)
5. Quoniam Tu Solus Sanctus (15:44) (Samuel Ramey)
6. Cum Sancto Spiritu (21:34)
7. Credo In Unum Deum (25:30)
8. Et Incarnatus Est (27:31)
9. Et Resurrexit (31:18)
10. Sanctus - Pleni Sunt Coeli (35:29)
11. Agnus Dei (41:28) (Dame Janet Baker)
12. Dona Nobis Pacem (48:01)

  • I have never heard a more gorgeous, lush, intimate performance of Agnus Dei and am certain I never will. Janet Baker was a force of nature with every sound she ever made.

  • @thatchwilliams Thanks for taking the time to write. david

  • The voice and musicality of Janet Baker are always astonishingly touching with many layers of superb phrasing and legato. Thank you for posting this recording.

  • This recording was my first step out of the big band sound of Bach performance towards what I now am most comfortable with, i.e. Gardiner, Suzuki. After the likes of Karajan and Klemperer this came as such a relief. I'd never before heard the details of the choral parts as I did here though I can't remember much about the soloists.

  • Marriner is one of the best conductors you can get for this kind of repertoire. And so is the Academy of St. Martin
