"We're definitely good, but I don't think you can say we're that original. I regard us as being incredibly good plagiarists." - Chris Martin, the Coldplay lead singer

A video detailing the similarities between Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly". This is for news/entertainment purposes only in regards to Satriani's recent decision to file a lawsuit against Coldplay for plagiarism.
If you have not heard of Joe Satriani before this fiasco, do not be so quick to accuse him of money grubbing. Satriani has sold over 10 million albums and is considered one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of our time. Even Coldplay recognizes his legendary status. You would be upset, too, if you spent 10 years writing a piece of music as a love song to your wife and then watching another band win a Grammy with it. Satriani made extended efforts to keep this out of court, but Coldplay continued to ignore him, hoping "this little guitar player would leave them alone," in Satriani's words. Regardless, Satriani is committed to donating the proceeds to charity.
Music plagiarism is extremely hard to prove in court. However, things aren't looking good for Coldplay. They need to take this seriously, something I'm not sure they do seeing as they ignored the lawsuit until a day before the Grammy's despite Satriani's continued efforts, and only finally responded to the lawsuit when Satriani warned Coldplay that he hired a team of lawyers to serve them at the Grammy's.
I understand that the two sides of the argument are essentially polarized to Satriani fans against Coldplay fans, but this video will hopefully present the facts analyzed through music theory in a way that makes sense that will cut through the "but Coldplay is so much more successful, they obviously didn't steal it" bullshit.

My Father as a big RnB and Blues fan(bless him)tells me he thought the same of almost every Rolling Stones song. But they were smart enough to stay out of court & quite often the plaintiffs were too poor to refuse a compromise. Riff ripping is rife in commercial music but it always has been. After all these songs have already settled into the conscious millieu decades earlier making it easier for the masses to accept, familiar, warm non-confrontational Hits. One wonders why?
just because 1 part of the song sounds similar and you are jealous cuz coldplay won best song of the year with that song, it doesnt meen u have to accuse coldplay of copying it, just wtf, u retard they are different
The fact that the songs are nearly identical but colplays is more popular means one thing: People who like coldplay are not listening to the music, they are looking at the bands cute faces, a good half of the coldplay fans i see are girls under the age of 14, Satriani gets fans of people who are open minded enough to listen to something without lyrics in it, most people think that instrumentals are a joke but satriani can put 100x more emotion in a song than some pop stars with cute haircuts.
Continuing: The only thing people like you promote is the thought that music is a popularity contest, Joe satriani doesnt need the money, or the fame, he wants to protect what is his, because he put alot of work into his song that he wrote for somebody he loved, and he waited 6 months before suing the people who ignored his questions. I garuntee you have never heard another satriani song in your life, but i have heard all of coldplays cliche poems with guitars over them, and i am not impressed.
