During the Cold War era, the nuclear arms race resulted in weapons with the power to wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. Dallas Campbell remembers growing up in the 1970s when 'Protect and Survive' leaflets were distributed to homes, providing government advice on how to survive a nuclear attack. The responsibility to unleash Armageddon rested on the shoulders of just a handful of men and in 1971, Horizon gained unprecedented access to their extraordinary daily lives.

  • LMAO @ the end. What if the indicator of a psychological breakdown was the armed guy shooting the other armed guy that's supposed to shoot the guy that's having a psychological breakdown? Shit.

  • Damn that woman was fast with that coffee!

  • Where can we watch the rest of the show?

  • @orf32

and when they both dies thei heads fall on the launch button?? shit

  • After 3 billion years of evolutionary life on our planet, our pinnacle is defined by our extraordinary ability to destroy not only one another, but the very systems that comprise the oasis that is planet Earth.

Men of integrity are often misled by men of persuasion.

  • @curryjunkie Take heart my friend! Were you alive during the cold war? It truly was scary, all the time. Every news broadcast gave us another reason to think the Reds were inches away from frying us, and that our response would be an immediate launch of everything we had - mutually assured destruction was our only option. Nowadays I think our primary nuclear threat is terrorists, and they might eventually get a bomb or two, but 99% of the world will still wake up the next day if they use it.

  • @orf32 If one of the two is shot, the weapons couldn't be fired. The crazy guy couldn't launch.

I think the handguns were more of a threat to force the other guy to turn his key and press his button if he seemed scared or hesitant when the orders came. (I think one drill showed that only half of the crews actually launched when ordered to do so, though the crews didn't know it was a drill - they thought it was the real thing.) Either way, that's pretty hardcore.
