  • @Va1or5torm....well technically that's not totally correct either. In 1994, when Open Skyz (Hugo's band at the time) was supporting Mr. Big, their manager Herbie Herbert recommended resuming Journey with Hugo at the helm. The band was well aware of Hugo as a candidate, but the decision at that point (and from then on) was Hugo looks way too much like Steve Perry. Perry later temporarily rejoined for 1996's Trial by Fire. Then onto Augeri & Pineda...

    Cheers and Journey on....

  • @guitarnutter Yeah I agree with you there

  • Well. Put it this way. If all fails with Arnel. Neal and Jonathan had better pick Hugo. He's the only singer that would keep the band existing if they were to lose another singer. The band has been through too many and fans will not be ready to accept anything less. Hugo will defineately be the best choice. PERIOD!

  • 2112 your right. Va the whole MTV Behind the Music can be found on youtube. I still say Hugo would have been the best pick. The Frontiers singer is not as good as Hugo, not even close.

  • Unerstand your point but do have to question the difference between perry and the current singer. Arnel sings exactly like sp but lacks that essential passion as he has to effectively do it phonetically. I remember seeing journey with him and it was a perfect impression. the only real difference was when jeff scott soto stepped in and was then fired for being too different!!!! it's all academic as even steve perry doesn't know if he sounds like steve perry anymore!!!

  • Here's a point everyone is either missing or avoiding: Neal said he didn't want Journey to sound like the best "tribute band." That's it. Yes, Hugo is fantastic! With him we'd have the 1981 Journey back! But Arnel has a full-range ORIGINAL voice. And Journey never considered Hugo. The "Frontiers" frontman was in line for the job. P.S. Everyone do your homework. Learn why the band HAD to move on without Perry. MTV got the whole story in 98. I taped it. I'm sure you can find it online.

  • Ill put it this way, no love loss between Neal and Steve. Neal hates the fact that Steve is still getting payed for all the old Journey songs, as he should.

  • @usha777 ....And I'm not saying that the songwriting issue is what made Schon avoid Hugo, but he could have thought about it.

One reason Schon got scared, like you said, is because of how incredibly talented and similar to Perry Hugo is, vocally, but if I were the decisionmaker in a band like Journey, I would totally use that as one big asset to the band (not that it's the only asset)!! Neal's decision makes me think he hates Steve Perry to the point that he doesnt want someone like him around.

  • @usha777 Wow are you serious? How incredibly stupid of Neal Schon! This made me lost respect for Neal, because he could have made Journey a far more successful band in the long run, had he picked Hugo, given his great songwriting skills, which apparently are as good as Perry's, what do you think? One of many reasons. I'm a guitarist in an original band, and I like composing music and all, but I think the actual songs are far better, if a good singer with good writing abilities helps me with it.

  • @usha777 Wow are you serious?

How incredibly stupid of Neal Schon!
