Tranquility, also known as Node 3, is an element scheduled to be added to the International Space Station (ISS).

It was built under management of and paid for by ESA and the Italian Space Agency by Thales Alenia Space for NASA and will be owned and operated by NASA. It is currently planned to be flown to the ISS by STS-130. Launch is scheduled for February 7, 2010.

The module provides six berthing locations, however three of those locations will be disabled as modules originally planned to be attached to Tranquility were canceled. STS-130 will also bring the Cupola, a large window module and robotics work station to the ISS which will be attached to the nadir-side of Tranquility. The module also includes various critical ISS systems, especially life support systems.

The Tranquility module will contain the most advanced life support systems ever flown in space. These systems will recycle waste water for crew use and generate oxygen for the crew to breathe.

In addition, Tranquility will contain an atmosphere revitalization system to remove contaminants from the atmosphere and monitor/control the atmosphere constituents of the ISS. Tranquility will also contain a Waste and Hygiene Compartment (toilet) for supporting the on-board crew.

Tranquility will primarily be used for exercise, storage, and robotics work in connection with Cupola.

  • I have an idea. Instead of fighting with each other and having endless wars, why don't the worlds governments spend their military/ security budget on space so that we can actually prove just how smart we are.

  • @sillygames Or if we took it a step further and imagined that entire world ditched military spending completely and focused entirely on scientific research and development, imagine where we'd be. Not only would we automatically gain world peace (in a broad sense) but we could also end poverty and the advances in technology would make us a sustainable and environmentally friendly. It would push us into a new era. We could be exploring the stars and other planets within decades. Imagine.

  • @BawstinBrewin Yep space race 2.0

  • I'd love to be stationed aboard the I.S.S.

  • @yomamasapeach that would be awesome. Space Race II ?

  • @Aitidina Thats my point. We need to take care of the people of earth. The spending which nations use to build up their military could be used to feed thousands, build new homes, solve ecological problems and diseases. Then, once we think we are good enough and evolved to the point of no more hate, we send ships around space.

  • @yomamasapeach I have another idea: Instead of looking always for our own progress, why don't we help our mates to have a better life? why don't we try to solve our problems on Earth before carrying them to space? There will be a day when a station like that one will carry a single flag in the name of humanity, and not in the name of some guys.

  • @yomamasapeach You're damn right! People have to stop wars... and start a new space programs.

  • I think it should be named the Francis Ford Cupola

  • My boyfriends dad is an astronaut! I want to be one, all my life I have:) it would be a stunning experience . I want to visit the cupola so badly

  • @TechXMarine sorry I was imitating the usual anti-space folks who want our money going to much more wasteful bullshit
