The English tradition of Wassailing dates back to before the year 450 when our Anglo-Saxon ancestors first began to settle en mass on british soil, this is evident because of the various other germanic countries who share very similar Wassailing customs. Wassailing traditions whithin England vary from region to region. In the southwest (Wessex) for example Wassailing involves variuos rituals wherby the remains of the years cider are poured around the trees in an orchard and encouraged to grow with dancing and Wassailing song, ensuring a good crop for the following year. In the middlands (Mercia), Wassailing traditions are slightly different, "Wassailer's" will go door to door wishing health and prosperity to the house and the inhabitants therein with a Wassail song; in return ofcourse for an alcoholic beverage (or two) to be poured into the Wassail bowl (the style in which we beleive this song comes from).

We hope you enjoy our rendition of this great song from our rich ancient heritage....Wassail !!

note... A few pints of ale were enjoyed prior to the singing of this song, hence the less than polished performance! Thanks for watching!

  • Excellent treatment. I have heard Ramskyte (Hampshire 4 part male group) do this differently. Also wonderful.

  • @wordweaver58 Thank you! Haven't heard of 'Hampshire', can't wait to check them out.

    Merry Christmas.

  • what's the name of this awesome song?

  • Hi Thank's for watching! It's titled simply "Malpass Wassail" presumably because this particular "wassailng" song comes from Malpas in Cheshire. We first heard it on a "Watersons" CD, a family singing group from Yorkshire who sang mainly English traditional songs in four part harmony.

  • This is my favorite version of my favorite Wassail! Thank you!

  • @AEngleSaex Hi. This is actually a Cornish song! James Madison carpenter, the American folklorist, collected several versions of this wassail around the Truro area of Cornwall in 1929/30, and most of the text comes from his manuscript. Peter Kennedy recorded a version for the BBC in 1951 in the Cornish village of Malpas in the same area. Fierce proud we are down here!

  • That was something special, love to see more blokes.

  • Wonderful! Beautifully sung
