Wayang Kulit (Puppet Theatre) - Bali

Wayang Kulit means puppet theatre. In Bahasa Indonesia, wayang means theatre and kulit, skin. The puppets are made from skin of buffalo. This video shows a performance held in an esplanade at the entrance of Kutuh Kaja, a village near Ubud, to the north. The place is close to the village cemetery. They were preparing a ngaben or a collective funeral for the deceased. After the show of wayang kulit, a male wearing a wood mask performs Topeng Dance. Topeng means "mask" in Bahasa Indonesia. En primer lloc el vídeo mostra una representació de marionetes de pell de búfal. En indonesi, "kulit" vol dir pell i "wayang", teatre. Seguidament es pot veure un fragment de la dansa Topeng. El Topeng és una dansa que es balla amb màscara de fusta (topeng). Tant el teatre de marionetes com les danses se celebren en una esplanada a prop del vilatge de Kutuh Kaja, situat a uns tres quilòmetres al nord d'Ubud. Les representacions formen part dels prolegòmens per a la celebració d'un funeral col·lectiu -ngaben- que va celebrar-se el dia següent. Kutuh Kaja. Bali central.
