'81, Fairy Footsteps, ridden by Lester Piggott, Tolmi, Go Leasing, Marwell.
A few days before this race Lester Piggott nearly lost his ear in a starting stall incident, and was riding with his ear sewn back on, and bandages under his riding helmet...
Genius ride. Piggott had nearly had his ear ripped off at Epsom during April, and came back the day before this because he knew Fairy Footsteps was good, but not the same horse as her juvenile year; sadly this was confirmed by her run in the Musidora Stakes at York. Lester and her trainerknew what he had to do; go out and take the sting out of the others. Marwell went on to become a top-notch sprinter. A great race and a great finish. The winning trainer? Henry Cecil - enough said.
This was a really exciting race as it actually happened. Fairy Footsteps was really strongly fancied but Tolmi had been a brilliant two year old. What a brilliant race had that day. Marwell ,who was close up, was a really good filly too.
wonderful memories, thank you. I understand why they had to change, but it's marvellous to see them running without rails - the start seems to take place in a random bit of the Heath as though it was some race being run in King Charles' day in 1680!!
And for anyone who didn't know, Lester's ear was sewn back on six days before after a dreadful accident in the stalls at Epsom: how he was able to ride that day says everything about the single-mindedness of the man.
I backed second placed Tolmi, ridden by Edward Hide, ante post for this race ( her seasonal debut ). Fairy Footsteps started odds on for her next start ( the Musidora at York ) but was very disappointing.
Tolmi was beaten by Fairy Footsteps this day but was a better miler(IMO)than the Henry Cecil trained filly.
Nice one Blackbird, had forgotten about this one! Marwell was a real speed merchant and I don't think this was her trip but Fairy Footsteps lived up to her name that day!
