It's simply a comment on a "deviation from the norm"...it's a male dominated genre. Females should be empowered to play it if they feel it. If you were a male ballet dancer, you would probably specify your gender as well.

I see what you mean, but it's more related to the fact that there are so few female metal guitarists. It's mainly a male dominated genre, and females doing it well gives a different interpretation of sorts and empowers other females to do the same. I'm a girl in a thrash band and I'm not that amazing a guitarist. I have rhythm but I can't shred or solo well... Anyway, after we played our set I had like 10 people come up to me say omg you are fucking awesome great fucking job, particularly girls. Being a female metal guitarist makes you stand out, because it's unusual to see chicks playing instruments in the metal scene.
