"La Pastorella"

La pastorella si leva per tempo
menando la caprete a pascer fora;
di fuor in fuora, la traditora
co' suoi beglocchi la minnamora..
e fa di mezzanotte apparir giorno.

Poi se ne giva a spasso la fontana
calpestando le erbette, o tenerelle.
O tenerelle, galanti e belle,
sermollin fresco, fresche mortelle;
e il grembo ha pieno di rose e di viole.

Poi la sera ritorna alla sua stanza
con la vincastra in man, discinta e scalza;
discinta e scalza ride e saltella
per ogni balza leggiadra e bella...
Così la pastorella passa il suo tempo.



"Fuggi da questo cielo"

Fuggi da questo cielo
aspro e duro, spiegato e gielo.
Tu che tutto imprigioni e leghi,
nè per pianto ti frangi o pieghi,
fier tiranno, giel dell'anno,
fuggi l'a dove il verno
su le brine ha seggio eterno.

Vieni candida, vien vermiglia,
tu del mondo sei maraviglia.
Tu, nemica d'amare noie
dà ad anima delle gioie;
messaggera per Primavera,
tu sei dell'anno la giovinezza,
tu del mondo sei la vaghezza.

Vieni, leggiadrsa e vaga,
primavera d'amor presaga.
Odi Zefiro che t'invita
e la terra col ciel marita.
Al suo raggio venga Maggio;
pieno il grembo di bei fioretti
vien su l'ali dei Zefiretti.



Translation:


"The Shepherdess"


The sherpherdess rises early,
and takes the little goats out to pasture,
while more and ever more, beguiling me
with her pretty eyes she makes me fall in love,
and lets midnight seem like plain day to me.

Then she takes a walk down to the spring,
trodding down grass and tender herbs.
O those tender herbs, graceful and pretty,
fresh thyme, and fresh myrtle,
and her lap is full of roses and violets.

Then in the evening she returns to her chamber,
her staff in her hand, ungirt and barefoot;
ungirt and barfoot she loughs and jumps about;
and is with every jump merry and pretty...
Thus the sherperdess passes her time.

Flee these climes
so rough and hard, merciless and cold!
You who imprisons everything and ties it down,
you, whom tears don't move nor bend,
fierce tyrant, frost of the year,
flee to where winter
has its eternal hoary throne!

Come, you bright one, you of vermilion,
you are the wonder of this world!
You, an enemy of bitter annoyances,
fill our soul with joy;
you, messenger of Spring,
you are the youth of the year,
you are the delight of this world!

Come, you gracios and fair one,
announce the spring of love.
Listen to Zephyr, who invites you
and marries the earth to the heavens!
At his warm flow the month of May,
its lap with pretty flowers filled, may come
adrift upon the wings of little Zephyrs.
