India's Prime Minister has asked the US to extend it's power in Pakistan to reduce the influence of the Taliban in the country.

In unusually frank remarks, Manmohan Singh questioned whether Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistan president, had full control of Pakistan.

Singh is in the US capital for an official state visit - the first of Obama's administration - to discuss regional security, climate change, and a landmark nuclear deal.

Patty Culhane reports.

  • @petradog409 Well, India don't have to be liked by Paki rats... India's destiny's clearly defined... it's destined to be a great Global Powerhouse in the next 10-15 years the most... while Paki rats are heading to stone ages...

  • deep... India has a history of peace and understanding which cannot be equaled. Yes, every country has something to offer but look closely at this country... you'll be impressed. Like others, too, they have room for growth and need to involve themselves with other nations. We all could gain....

  • back to diplomacy folks... we can all resolve our problems peacefully... we can all feel like winners again.

  • Why do you say so? Yes, we do have lot to learn from India indeed, if we think. And, why only India? Good, if this is to be learned, it is there in every country, in every culture, in every human being, every creature on earth. Why not turn attention to see the good in every country and every human being? Perhaps, we can wipe the hatred and anger from our heart and learn to cooperate. Govt. of India, or the Govt. of China and Govt. of United States need to do that.

  • That's pretty simple-minded, ray. There are some hateful right-wing nitwits who feel that way, but they are only a few loud idiots. I'm sure you have a few of the same type in your country, don't you?

  • There's a lot fear and anxiety all around. The things that seem to reduce the pain are real democracy and the rule of law. These things don't guarantee a neurotic-free existence, but they're the best things we've discovered so far.

  • They do understand it, more or less. It's not a yes/no proposition. Each is imperfect, each is constrained by the wishes of power centers (often greedy and narrow-minded) from within and without. Politics is the art of the possible.

I want what you want. Victories are incremental, aren't they?

  • Yes, that's the bottom line. In a very screwed-up world with very many evil and selfish men in power, these two countries represent something imperfect, but good.
