This was the soundtrack of M*A*S*H, both the film and the tv-series. The music was written by Johnny Mandel and the lyrics by Mike Altman, son of Robert Altman the director of the original film. Altman jr was only 14 at the time.
The excellent cover here was made by Lady & Bird, a one-album duo consisting of french (and I think israeli?) singer/songwriter Keren Ann http://www.kerenann.com and Bardi Johannsson of Bang Gang http://www.banggang.net (he's from Iceland). Their other music is very nice, but I have a special affection for this album. Maybe it could be described as a dark fable where two characters decide to make themselves seen by jumping off a bridge (if just seen as the surface of the story). In short: find it, listen to it.

@rawrtoyou66 It depends on how you take the lyrics. At face value they are very depressing. But ultimately this thong is a symbol of ultimate freedom. This is something nobody can take from you. Ever. What would tey do to you? Sue you? Imprison you? Torture you?
...you'd still be a selfless bastard for choosing this option and will not gain any respect for taking the easy exit...

Regarding Mike Altman, who wrote the lyrics at age 14: His father told Johnny Carson that, while he himself was paid only $70,000 for directing the film, MASH, Mike made over a $1 million from the song.

When I was a child, the mash version scared me to death. This version is so beautifully sad, and I now have an appreciation for the original version. How wonderful this is.

Nice Cover Guys but
1 Word to Sony Music FUCK YOU you are all ignorand bastards to let a so wonderfull pice off musik lock the original version is reachless on the top and for which ? Money ... i hope that you eventually comes back to the rational and let the people listen to such a wunderfull pice off music
