This is just a quick and simple solution for mac-user who have the .ipsw firmware files downloading as a folder instead of a .ipsw file. This does not require downloading the file again.

damn. I'm using windows xp, and I tried your way it didn't work, and I opened other siter to see a solutio, and it did not work,

Because the file is called iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore , and there is not any thing such as .zip or .ispw at the end.

Hey monkeyballp, could you please post the solution here for my benefit? I've been getting the same problem whenever I try to get redsnow to recognize the ipsw file. I downloaded the file with Firefox several times, chose the correct firmware (iphone 3G 3.0) but nothing seems to work. I did not do the "restore" steps with iTunes beforehand, but I checked my iphone settings and I have the same firmware installed as the ipsw file I downloaded. Any help would be awesome...
