Billy was playing with the great and tragically late Sam Cooke, who was shot and killed in December 1964 in LA, just a year or so before this was filmed. Between Sam's work with the Soul Stirrers (1951-1957) and his massive pop output (57-64) is as good as any canon of American music, soul and otherwise. Check out "Bringing it all back home" & "A change is gonna come" for proof.
Preston was quite a character. I remember him playing keyboard for both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I also remember, in 1991, when he burned down his own house, in L.A., and was convicted of insurance fraud. He was 59 years old when he died, in 2006, from kidney failure and other complications of severe hypertension. He spent the last 7 months of his life in a coma.
Until I saw these vids,I didn't realize that fif BEATLE BILLY PRESTON had any hits in the mid '60s.I'd never actually HEARD DOUBLE-O-SOUL at the time but I do remember references to it at school.Dig the groovy hair!
I like his 'MAGGIE'S FARM" I've heard DYLAN do this type of upbeat tempo version too.BILLY'S dance moves r straight JAMES BROWN rip-offs & "DO THE BOOMERANG" sounds just like JR. WALKER'S "SHOTGUN"
@absolutmod of course not and it ain't the Sonny Stitt version either. What did you expect?? I was lucky enough to see both Edwin and Billy live and they both rocked!

His version sounds white! Never thought I'd say that about Billy Preston!
Probably due to the production "values."
Here's my favorite version, by Edwin Starr:
"v=WDuZRMIamJg"
(the bass doesn't come through well, but it still swings!)
