@nannmorris Yes, it does sound better on piano, which I believe was composer Claude Débussy's intent. This is one of my classical favorites. Some parts of the melody sound good with soft woodwinds (clarinet or flute), piano, harp, bells or violins leading and others accompanying, but other parts demand a piano solo or lead with optional string accompaniment to sound right. A strong violin solo or lead loses some of the "Moonlight" mood and feels as out of place as brasses or other percussion.
