Final Fantasy games feature a lot of religious symbolism. But if you look closely, those references to religion actually form a very interesting pattern; the Final Fantasy games are actually against organized religion...and even the concept of God himself. So today, we're looking at the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy Legend to see just how this popular series deals with religious issues.

The 3 comments directly below me are probably the only ones that aren't arguing about religion.
For those of you who choose to argue about religion, and beliefs, let me point something out.
This video is about trying to prove that final fantasy is anti-religous. Do you really have to argue about which belief is true on a video where the creator (love you MatPat btw) never even gave his own opinion about religion?
*sigh* this comment probably won't even be read by anyone.

Here's a more simplistic, practical interpretation. Your game needs a big, powerful final boss character. What is more terrifying and powerful than "god"? Deities have been an enemy in stories for a very long time.
Additionally, we are in an age of secularism. Like nazis, zombies, and terrorists, radical religion makes a convenient enemy in terms of game villains, because it reflects popular opinion.

I think FFX shows a much more connectable scenario for people in America. For me it was obvious that Yuna symbolized christianity and Tidus symbolized agnosticism or atheism (I think either one could work in his case). The heart catching story in the game was that Yuna and Tidus were able to get along so easily and protect each other despite their different beliefs.

I read it and agree. It's frustrating when people get into arguments in comment threads, and the arguments really have nothing to do with the video. This video doesn't really make any claims about the validity of any particular religion, it just presents an explanation for why the games contain these themes. Really, it has more to do with Japanese culture, and how the culture influences gaming there. All that being said, I, being a Christian, do not find this video to be an attack on religion.
