U don't use a shunt unless the other side of the neck isn't providing enough blood to the brain for normal function. Plus the patient is given meds to slow blood flow and they are monitored for brain function. If the monitor shows a problem then they will shunt. The less the have to do for the patient the better and less chance of SSI and better healing time.

I have the same question...It's up to the surgeon but it means it has to be a faster operation than if he used a shunt
