Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was wounded in a shooting at a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway store in northwest Tucson Saturday morning.
Eighteen people were shot. Six were killed, including a child and a federal judge.
Although there were early reports that Giffords had been killed, that was not the case. She was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson where she was taken into surgery. She is now in critical condition in the intensive care unit and has been responding to doctors' commands.
Dr. Peter Rhee of UMC said he was "very optimistic" about Giffords' recovery. "I'm about as optimistic as you can get in this situation," he said. Rhee described Giffords' wound as "through and through" and said the next 24 hours would be critical.
