I grew up in NE Florida and am Derek's same age. Distinctly remember seeing him play around town at various venues, etc. His musical pedigree is pretty damn strong, but his musical sensibilities, even as a little kid, were remarkable. It was nothing like watching these 12 year old Mongolian "prodigies" on Youtube playing whatever classical piece they've practiced for 16 hours a day. His music was always very organic, very natural, from the place of creation and expression, not simple repetition.
