With this episode, host Dan York starts a three part series on learning to use the 'git' distributed version control system ( http://www.git-scm.com/ ). In this first show, Dan discusses version control systems in general and what are the various pieces that comprise a version control system. He discusses repositories, working copies as well as concepts such as branching and merging - and then wraps up with a few of the issues associated with traditional systems such as CVS and SVN that git sets out to solve.

Good episode, but the verb 'commit[' was used multiple times when talking about saving a version of a file on the server. In git, that's not accurate -- commit just stages the file in the index. Pushing those changes actually does send them to the remote repository.
