This blue diamond reached a record 9.5 million dollars at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva. That makes it the world's most expensive gemstone per carat. The stone is mounted in a platinum ring. It doesn't have any internal flaws and weighs just over 7 carats. It was the rarest to enter the market last year - which pushed the price up, says David Bennett who led the auction. [David Bennett, Sotheby's Jewelry Chairman]: "I don't know how long it took to sell the blue diamond, a long time, and the bids were basically of fifty thousand francs, which if you are at eight or nine million, going out for fifty thousand francs takes quite a lot of time. It was very, very exciting, I mean, there were several bidders towards the end who were desperate to have the stone." Sotheby's say the sale of this gemstone and others shows there's still demand for fine jewels.
Like many other blue diamonds, the rock comes from the Cullinan mine in South Africa. And there's another perk for its anonymous new owner - they can name the diamond too.
