according to Kurt Vonnegut,Lincoln was only a Congressman when he said in 1848 of President and commander-in-chief James Polk:

Gosh that man knew his rhetoric.
I don't know Polk, but I should. It appears that prosecuting the Mexican-American War killed him.
According to Wiki, his last words were: "I love you, Sarah. For all eternity, I love you." He said it three months out of office.
