Only the tip of the cue can legally hit the cueball.
Using the ferrule is illegal.
Guys, no need to be nasty.
I've seen grown men in bars do the same thing and I explain to them that only the leather tip of the cue can hit the cueball legally.

Hey kid, dont listen to all of these jerks. While they are right about it actually being called a spoon shot, they dont need to be so rude. Keep playing and keep getting better. In the future, learn how to properly jump if you plan to play in a tournament but your friends most likely wont know the difference so keep doing this for the time being. Its just a game and dont stress about it too much if you miss a shot or lose a game and you will continue to improve. Good luck and and enjoy the game!
