The Miracle at the Meadowlands is the term used by sportscasters and Philadelphia Eagles fans for a fumble recovery by cornerback Herman Edwards that he returned for a touchdown at the end of a November 19, 1978 NFL game against the New York Giants in Giants Stadium. It was seen as miraculous because it occurred at a point in the game when the Giants were easily capable of running out the game's final seconds.

The Giants had the ball, and the Eagles had no timeouts left. Everyone watching expected quarterback Joe Pisarcik to take one more snap and kneel with the ball, thus running out the clock and preserving a 17-12 Giant upset. Instead, he attempted to hand it off to fullback Larry Csonka and botched it, allowing Edwards to pick up the ball and run 26 yards for the winning score.

Greg Schiano thinks this was the right play to call.

In retrospect this play was a blessing in disguise. Gints fans finally had enough and demanded a change at the top. Some hired a plane to fly over the stadium with the message: "30 years of lousy football is enough".

The NFL then stepped in to mediate the Mara Family's issues, hired George Young as GM, who then hired Ray Perkins as HC, who brought along some guy named Parcells as defensive coordinator, who then drafted Phil Simms at QB, and Lawrence Taylor at LB.

    Thanks, Herman Edwards! :)

Hey,Kenny it was about 18 years of lousy football not 30 because the giants made the NFL championship game in 1958 and 1959 against the colts and then made the playoffs again in 1961,62 and '63 and then again 1981,1963-81, 18 years.

No. Vince Papale recovered a fumble on a punt return, this was Herman Edwards. & Papale's TD didn't even count, there was a flag on the play.

Still great to pull of such awesome comebacks. When the Giants get too cocky...the Eagles take it and run. Literally.

This was the coach's fault period. The play did call for a reverse pivot. Pisarcik did not want to challenge the coach and call off the play from what I have read. Players in the huddle were saying just take a knee. Bad call, bad execution.
