Note: This video is for noobs - it does not demonstrate whammy squeals - only the fundamental principle to get Billy Gibbons type of pinch harmonics. Since the fret hand has very little to do with pinch harmonics, it is not included - do note that adding vibrato/bends with the fret hand changes the angle/attack of the string to the pick - so adding some may help make it easier as well. Focus on getting the simultaneous pick/thumb strike on a string as demonstrated, the thumb (or finger) mute is what produces the harmonic.

Tip: For quick success, dial in some gain/overdrive - find the sweet spot near the neck PU and work the 2nd/3rd strings for quicker results... be aggressive, don't be afraid to 'dig' into the string, once you get the hang of it... it is easy to get them anywhere, anytime - with or without distortion.

  • dont you have to do something with your other hand?

  • no - firmly fretting the note will produce a 'pinch' harmonic, vibrato or a bend will add sustain/color to the harmonic though.

  • how long would u expect for a learner to get the hang of this

  • I think that really depends on your existing picking style/technique - could be minutes, could be days. I find that a lot of beginning players are sort of timid when it comes to striking the strings, apply some attitude/force. I also find its easier to get one when you are learning if your pick hand is more parallel to the top of the guitar with your thumb inline with your wrist - than a classical style where your pick hand is more perpendicular to the strings.

  • Dude. It took me like a few days/weeks to get it down but i can get it every time. Just keep practicing. There's no more to teach than this guy said. Just practice it.
